French lawyer Jacques Verges, an attorney with broad international experience, has been selected to defend former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, the lawyer said Saturday, 27 March 2004 in Paris. Saddams nephew, Ali Barzani al-Tikriti engaged his services, Verges said. Verges previously had been engaged to defend Iraqs former deputy prime minister Tariq Aziz. Verges is an expert on war crime trials and terrorism. In 2002, he defended former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
